Nigel Genders, Chief Education Officer for the Church of England, gave oral evidence to the All Party Parliamentary Group for Religious Education on Religious Literacy.

When I last spoke to the APPG we were asking what RE in schools is for, and I suggested that it should primarily be about religious or theological literacy. So I am delighted that the APPG is dedicating such a serious amount of time to the question of religious literacy. The discussion concerns the role for religious literacy in society, but my starting point is the education system as a point of focus to make a significant difference.
